Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to be the face of a new football video game aiming to rival EA Sports' FC 24.

It was announced on December 12 that Ronaldo was part of a group investing $40million (£31.97m) into UFL, a new soon-to-be-launched football console game. The group, which features the Al Nassr forward, will be hoping the video game will compete with some of the industry's main competitors in the years to come.

Ronaldo completed a move to Al Nassr in December last year and has since been one of the faces of the Saudi Pro League. Now Ronaldo could be the cover star of a video game once again following the investment.

After the announcement, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner expressed his delight over being part of the new venture. "I'm thrilled to be a part of this project as UFL can become the new breed in football gaming," he said in a statement released this week. Ronaldo's investment will look to help UFL rival some of the industry's biggest football video games. EA Sports' FC 24, formerly known as FIFA, is currently one of the most popular, with its newest release featuring Manchester City striker Erling Haaland as its cover star.

Lionel Messi is the cover star for eFootball by Konami, which is a free-to-play video game on all of the major consoles including PlayStation5 and Xbox Series X. Messi was previously the main figure on EA Sports' FIFA series before being replaced by Borussia Dortmund star Marco Reus in 2016.

Since then, the popular series has had several cover stars for its game. Ronaldo featured from 2017-18 and was followed by Eden Hazard, Virgil van Dijk, Kylian Mbappe and Sam Kerr in the subsequent releases. UFL is being developed by Strikerz Inc., and the game is also set to be free-to-play upon its release. No date has yet been announced for when the new game will be available for fans to play.

Strikerz Inc. CEO Eugene Nashilov explained how the addition of Ronaldo as an investment will only add to the appeal for fans when it's eventually available to the public. “Having Cristiano Ronaldo join us as a partner and investor is a significant step forward and an endorsement of our vision to create the world’s leading game for fans," said Nashilov.

"UFL is committed to innovation, technology, and entertainment and we see significant potential to do things differently in the gaming industry. This is an ambition shared by Cristiano and we are excited to be working together, while continuing to engage with future investors, to create a game that fills a gap in the football gaming market by unifying a rich gaming experience with continuous progress and a fair approach.”
