A bomb squad had to carry out a controlled explosion on a beach near one of the UK’s biggest cities, after "historical ordnance" was discovered in the street.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers descended on a residential area in Craigmillar Park, Edinburgh. This came after a historic object was found. They were alerted around 3.25pm on Friday 15 December and safely removed the object.

An Edinburgh resident, Michael Stirling, who was walking along Cramond promenade on Saturday 16 filmed the device being safely detonated on the sand of the beach shortly before 11am.

The short video starts out panning slowly across the beach, before a sudden explosion erupts from the sand, sending a plume of smoke into the air. EdinburghLive reported that Michael said: "Went for a quiet Saturday morning walk along Cramond prom … the army had other ideas."
