A man was shot dead after he attacked a neighbour's home with a bulldozer as an argument boiled over and ended in tragedy in Italy.

Sandro Mugnai, 53, is believed to have been having a large family dinner with six people in the village of San Polo, in Arrezzo, when they suddenly heard a loud noise outside on January 5.

Gezim Dodoli, who reportedly had an ongoing dispute with his neighbour, was outside with a bulldozer and was first seen damaging cars parked outside the Mugnai home and then he went for the house, it is reported.

Mugnai could see the roof of the house start to collapse as the dipper arm from the bulldozer repeatedly struck against it.

He tried shouting at the neighbour who ignored him and so according to local media he went to get a shotgun - for which he had a licence.

Mugnai is then said to have fired one warning shot that was ignored by Dodoli and so he then fired four more into the excavator's cabin which killed the neighbour.

Mugnai - a blacksmith and wild boar hunter - is said to be well-liked in San Polo but his once close relationship with Dodoli - a 59-year-old labourer from Albania - is said to have turned sour some time ago.

Frequent disagreements had taken place between the two men about everything from loud music to bad smells coming from the pipes to land boundaries.

Mugnai was arrested and initially was remanded in custody in Arezzo having been accused of murdering Dodoli who has left behind a wife and two children.

Pleading self-defence he has now been released while the investigation continues after the case was put before the judge Giulia Soldini, reported La Nazione.

“He has spoken about legitimate defence which we are putting forward and now we will wait for the prosecution to decide,” said defence lawyer Marzia Lelli.

The prosecution agreed that Mugnai did not pose a threat to the public, that it was unlikely he would try and flee or tamper with the evidence.
