For many, Christmas dinner is the highlight of Christmas day - being able to tuck into your delicious Christmas feast and enjoy all of the festive foods, trimmings and all - so it's only fair to let your favourite four legged friend join in the fun too.

While it's tempting to serve your dog human food, it's important to make sure you can serve them food that's safe for them to consume, but there are alternatives to a pup friendly Christmas dinner you can rustle up on Christmas Day. Saying that, it's important to know what foods are harmful to dogs, or your pooch in particular.

Many dog owners will make sure their beloved pooch can join in on the fun festivities, and some may even wrap some gifts up and put them under the tree, as well as enjoying dinner together. Dog owner Sarah Gills has shared her furry friend's festive dinner - but others warn there's one festive favourite that could be harmful to dogs.

She said: "This is just a nice treat on Christmas Day, all food in complete moderation and remembering if your dog has any intolerances to consider anything you give them." In the video, Sarah started off serving up boiled Brussels sprouts, broccoli, carrots, plain turkey, pigs in blankets, peas, boiled potatoes and a teaspoon of cranberry sauce into the dog bowl before covering in a dog friendly gravy - bone broth. She served it to her two dogs who devoured the festive dinner.

For the veg, Sarah claimed it was "all boiled, no added salt" and the meat was "all in complete moderation" and stated that it was "cooked in the oven with no oil or seasoning." For the gravy substitution, she made it from bone broth and added: "Ensure no onions or garlic."

However it's not recommended to serve dogs pigs in blankets warned pet experts Purina. "Even though your dog will find bacon wrapped sausages simply delicious, pigs in blankets are too high in salt and fat for them. Pork products should only be fed as a Christmas dog treat if it's a lean cut and always ensure that it's properly cooked."

Purina also urge owners to not feed dogs turkey skin as it's too fatty and make sure all the bones are removed from the turkey too. Other warnings include avoiding stuffing due to the onions, spices and herbs. They stated: "Onions can be toxic for your dog, while some spices and herbs can cause stomach upset."

When it comes to gravy, Purina advised to give them gravy dog food instead as human gravy is "far too salty and fatty for them" and should be" avoided as it could cause stomach upset, and digestive problems like sickness and diarrhoea."
