When we think of Christmas beverages, there are a few tipples that spring to mind, including mulled wine, Baileys hot chocolate, and festive rum. Another one that jumps out is eggnog, which has grown in popularity in recent years.
In fact, research from Costa Coffee on Gen Z preferences has revealed that one-in-five enjoy sipping on eggnog on Christmas Day. The creamy concoction is typically made from eggs, spices, rum, cream and a little sugar, and historians believe its origins date back to Medieval Britain.
While eggnog litters supermarket aisles, cooking expert David Davidov from The Cooking Foodie has shared his simple recipe that can be rusted up in just 15-minutes. He said: "This homemade eggnog is thick, creamy, rich, delicious and pretty easy to make! Tastes much better than store bought."
Taking to TikTok, David kicked off the video with footage of the velvety smooth drink, which is perfect to tuck into whilst watching a cosy festive film. He then shared his recipe, which you can find below.
Ingredients
- 480ml milk
- 240ml heavy cream
- Six egg yolks
- 100g sugar
- One teaspoon vanilla extract
- 60ml Cognac/ Whisky / Bourbon/ Rum (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cloves
- Pinch of salt

- Saucepan

Method
- To start making this festive beverage, simply whisk together the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl until light, thick and fluffy. Then set this aside for the time being.
- Next, combine the milk, cream, salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Slowly add the hot milk mixture into the eggs, make sure to whisk constantly whilst pouring.
- Then, pour the mixture into the saucepan and cook over a low heat, stirring frequently. Continue with this until the mixture has started to thicken or until it reaches around 70°C.
- Remove the mixture from the heat, and stir in the vanilla extract and liquor. Strain this through a sieve. Next, pour the eggnog into a bottle or container and chill in the fridge for around two hours.
- Once chilled, serve in a glass with ice cubes and sprinkle with a light coating of grated nutmeg and cinnamon. You can also find the recipe on The Cooking Foodie website HERE.
