The internet has been left collectively scratching its head after spotting a Yorkshire chippy's bizarre menu from times gone by.

While it's no surprise food prices have skyrocketed over the years, you'd expect people to look back fondly on a price board from the 70s. But the opposite happened after a menu from 1976 was shared on Twitter.

Instead of feeling nostalgic about the prices (which were so low you could probably order the entire menu for less than you'd pay for a drink nowadays), people were shocked by the cost of fish and chips. Specifically, many took issue with the 13p fish.

The ruckus came about after the snap of a "Yorkshire chippy price board from 1976" was shared by @NoContextBrits, and people thought something didn't add up. Rather than offering a deal on fish and chips, in the hope of encouraging sales, this chippy's approach was no nonsense.

You could buy fish and chips together for 21p or separately for 13p and 8p respectively, meaning it tots up to 21p when purchased together. Other options included cake and chips for 16p and specials from 17p. Meanwhile, chips and curry would set you back 5p per order.

In response, people were quick to debate the merits of the menu - and not everyone was so convinced. "No messing around with a bargain or a meal deal. It's either 21p for Fish and Chips or Fish (13p) + chips (8p) = 21p," someone joked.

Another quipped: "Do you get a free calculator with your order? The savings here are wild!" and someone else complained: "Why are there two combinations - "Fish and chips" and 'Cake and chips" - listed as combinations, yet priced at the total sum of the individual constituent parts? Superfluous. no?"

Meanwhile, other commenters were keen to compare the price of fish and chips in their area. "£9.90 for standard fish and chips at my local takeaway," read one reply, while another said: "£9 for a medium cod at mine. Medium chips £3,40".

Someone else revealed: "When you get a chippy tea I always spend like £20 need to go all out on a chippy tea."

But another said: "£4.80 in my local chippy, yes I'm still baffled why it's that cheap."
