'Entitled' couple use GoFundMe to raise £8,000 for their dream wedding
Everyone knows that weddings can be expensive and unless you’re wealthy, have savings, or can call on the bank of mum and dad, it could take a while to be able to afford the big day of your dreams.
However, some people choose to take a different tact and try their luck on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe to ask strangers to give them cash for their big day. Blasting the act as ‘entitled’ one person shared on social media that a couple she knew were campaigning for a whopping £8,000 ($10,000) for their big day.
The woman posted on a wedding shaming site: “Awful Couple Asking for 10k through GoFundMe. I know someone who's been with their partner for 6 months and they got engaged. That's not the problem though... The problem is they started a GoFundMe for 10K so they can have their "dream wedding". I was in complete awe. Imagine being so entitled that you ask others to pay 10K for one day. I don't have anything else to add, I just needed to share because what the hell.”

Sharing snapshots of the GoFundMe, the bride and groom reveal that they’re asking for £8,000 ($10,000) to cover the cost of their wedding that “reflects their personalities”. Describing their vision, they wrote: Imagine the radiant glow of the setting sun as we exchange vows under a beautiful, vine covered pergola. Picture the smiles, the tears of joy, and the collective embrace of our loved ones, celebrating our union. With your help, we can transform this vision into a realtity that will echo through our lives for years to come.”
Commenting on the Reddit post readers were dumbfounded that people had the sheer nerve to ask strangers for money for something like a wedding day. Asking if anyone had donated, the woman replied that someone had donated a dollar and commented on the GoFundMe page “this is embarrassing".
Another person replied: “Ugh. I always think that couples like this who are so focused on the perfect wedding day are going to end up divorced in a year. The wedding is just the beginning, not the finish line.”
Despite it appearing to many as an entitled act, it seems asking strangers for help paying for a wedding, honeymoon, or gifts isn’t that unusual. A simple search of the word ‘wedding’ on GoFundMe brings up more than 500 results of people asking for help with their nuptials. And while some look to have extenuating circumstances attached, others just want the cash because they don’t have it.
In 2018, British couple Jack Dudley and Hannah Louise Miell tried to crowdfund for their dream wedding in Ravello, Italy but ended up taking down the donation page after raising just £55 ($59) because they received so much abuse. One person accused them of “having more neck than ET”, while another told them to “try saving like the rest of humanity”.
