Man Utd's January transfer plan and what Champions League elimination would mean

Champions League elimination will have no bearing on Manchester United’s transfer business when the January window opens.

United, who are facing elimination at the Champions League group stage, are not planning for any major incomings or outgoings in next month’s window. Erik ten Hag’s side must beat Bayern Munich and hope Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw, if they are to progress to the knockout stage.

It is understood United are not under pressure to sell in January, even if they go out of the Champions League, with the financial hit that would entail in terms of loss of revenue. But any loss of European revenue would undoubtedly have an impact on United’s transfer budget for next summer and the spending power afforded to Erik ten Hag.

United could still carry on in Europe, in the Europa League, if they beat Bayern and there is a winner in the game between Copenhagen and Galatasaray. Several United stars out of favour, including Jadon Sancho and Donny van de Beek, are likely to move on next month, while Raphael Varane, Casemiro and Anthony Martial could also be offloaded to raise funds to strengthen Ten Hag’s squad.

Bayern are already through to the knockout stages as group winners but Thomas Tuchel has warned United his side want to finish strongly and will not let up at Old Trafford, with Harry Kane poised to start.

"I understand that some people thought that against Copenhagen it looked like we weren't throwing everything into it,” said Tuchel. “But when you sign for Bayern or United, you sign up to give 100 percent every day. When you wear the Bayern jersey, you behave like champions, there's no other way.

“We have high expectations, even if we are always under pressure. United will give everything to get through. But we expect a top performance from us. I hope we can match United's enthusiasm and energy, which I'm sure they'll bring to the game.

"They are always a dangerous team. They have a certain aura. It's part of their DNA that they can come through difficult moments. This stadium creates special moments. It will be a big challenge for us."

United were dealt a double blow as both Marcus Rashford and Martial missed training on Monday as Ten Hag put his squad through some last minute preparations. Defender Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Casemiro did return to training this week in a boost for the Dutch coach, though neither are expected to play a part in the clash with Bayern.
