Christmas is quickly approaching, with just 14 more sleeps until the big day.

We all have those guests we wish we didn't have to see over the festive period, whether it's the aunt who always drinks too much wine or the second cousin who's started to believe in every conspiracy theory he's seen on Facebook. For one woman, her uninvited guest was hiding in the Christmas tree.

Decked with fake snow, tinsel, baubles and fairy lights - Brett's tree looked perfectly normal from afar. But when the woman came home from work and was relaxing on the sofa, she started to hear what sounded like a sneeze.

Posting her experience on TikTok, user @brettbratt359 says she thought the sound could have been coming from one of her pets. "I started looking to see if my cat was stuck behind the couch or something but as I was looking around I saw this really big long-looking rat tail," she said.

On discovering a 'giant gray breathing ball of fur', Brett quickly realised a possum was residing amongst the branches. The social media user admitted the animal 'freaked' her out and that was she struggling to remove it.

"I’m trying to get him out and he will not let me," she added, explaining that her boyfriend and his friends found the incident hilarious. "I don’t know what to do, I don’t know how it got in here, I don’t leave my doors open."

Putting on some rubber gloves, Brett eventually managed to usher the possum away from the tree - but it then found shelter under her sofa. "I moved the couch with all my force and just went for it and tackled him like an NFL player," Brett added in a follow-up video.

Whilst not an issue in the UK, possums are known for causing chaos overseas. Earlier this year, one holidaymaker woke up to a 'crime scene' in her Airbnb bed, after one broke in.

The Australian woke up after a refreshing night's sleep to find that the other side of the bed she'd been kipping on was covered in urine and faeces. There were also little footprints on the pillow.

Shannon called the hosts who promptly turned up to locate the disruptive possum. Clearly wanting a little warmth, the animal was found snuggled up in the fireplace.

"They boarded up the fireplace so my little mate couldn't visit me last night. Can confirm though, I did not sleep very well," Shannon said. "The Airbnb hosts have been incredible. We went sightseeing today and they came - new mattress, new linen, everything is thrown out."
