It's the busiest time of the year for delivery drivers. Mountains of parcels pile up in warehouses across the country as shoppers dive into the Christmas shopping.

The growth of the internet and simple online orders has made it easier than ever to click a couple of buttons before your parcel turns up the next day like magic. But while there are lots of great, hardworking delivery drivers, the way one or two seem to treat parcels leaves much to be desired.

Most people who regularly order online will have had a bad experience of having their items tossed over a fence or left behind a bin to get soaked in the rain. But what do you do if you're unfortunate enough to find your Christmas parcel has been damaged?

Amazon is obviously a retail giant, with thousands of orders successfully delivered via its Prime service daily. As such, it has a simple procedure should you need to complain in the event something has arrived damaged.

If you want to replace an item Amazon advises:

  1. Go to Your Orders and select Return or replace items beside the item you want to replace.

Tip: If your order is from a third-party seller or not eligible for a replacement, select Return Items. Enter a return reason on the next screen.

  2. Select the item that you want to replace and select a reason from the Reason for return menu.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

It adds: "A replacement order, with the same shipping speed that was used on your original item, will be created. You'll need to return the original item within 30 days to avoid being charged for keeping both the original and replacement items.

"The replacement order may be shipped only after you ship the original item(s) back to Amazon. We recommend you to ship back the original item(s) as soon as you request a replacement."
