Mauricio Pochettino has called on the Chelsea board to "improve" his squad in the January transfer window after their humiliating 2-0 defeat at Everton.

The Blues were beaten for the third time in four Premier League matches thanks to second-half goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin. It was a much-improved performance from Pochettino's men following their defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to get them any points.

Fulham's victory over West Ham means Chelsea have dropped down to 12th on 19 points from 16 matches, having won just five top-flight matches all season. That is despite splashing out over £1billion since Todd Boehly took over in the summer of 2022, with over £435million of that spent during Pochettino's reign.

But the Chelsea boss has now come out and urged the club's board to dip into January transfer market in a bid for more signings. Speaking to Match of the Day after his side's defeat at Goodison Park, Pochettino said: "Football is about scoring goals and we were not clinical in front of goal. I'm really, really disappointed. We didn't get the point we deserved. I think we were better but we didn't get what we wanted.

"This was a game to play and to win. It's a problem we need to check. We need to analyse the reality. We need to talk and to try and improve in the next transfer market."

Pochettino then told his post-match press conference that Chelsea need to assess the current situation. "I think it's about to improve. We were talking after nearly four or five months, it's about to assess," he added.

"We need to score if we want to win the game. The team played well, dominate the game against a very difficult team like Everton. We deserve full credit because we were better than them but we need to score."

Reece James limped off during the first-half against Everton in another injury blow for the right-back. "He felt something in his hamstring," Pochettino said on the England international. "It's not so nice for him to suffer another injury. He is an important player."
