Woman slams anyone who doesn't iron bedsheets for guests at Christmas
When you have guests stay over for Christmas you no doubt make an effort to make sure your home looks its best for their arrival, but one woman has now slammed anyone who doesn't iron the bedsheets for their guests.
It's nice to make an effort for the people who are staying in your house - from making sure the bathrooms are spick and span to making sure their bedsheets are fresh and clean - but Christmas is an extremely busy time, and you don't always have time to make sure things are spotless.
However, one woman thinks it's important to make sure the guest's beds are made up for them with freshly laundered and iron sheets, or they might not feel welcome. Explaining her stance in BBC 5 Live's In My Opinion slot on December 8, Beverley East, owner of The Laundry Goddess in Sudbury, said: "In my opinion, having clean, laundered, ironed sheets is essential to make me feel welcome in your home. I do understand, obviously, that some people have very busy lives, but if someone just left a pile of sheets on an unmade bed and said to me 'make it up yourself', I probably wouldn't feel too welcome."
Radio host Rachel Burden, who thought the topic was "terrific" because it's "the sort of thing that really triggers people", replied: "I do think that the bed probably needs to be made, but whether it needs to be made with fresh sheets, all the time, for every single member of the family, that's where I give myself a little bit of leeway."
Another listener, called Chris, agreed with Beverley, saying: "Bed linnen should always be washed and ironed regardless of whether the visitors are coming, but especially when visitors are coming." However, not everyone had the same opinion. Owen replied, saying: "They might get a sofa cushion and a sleeping bag, if they're lucky," while another added: "I'm hyperventilating. Yes, always washed and ironed in our house."
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
Meanwhile, co-host Rick Edwards added: "Washed and ironed. That's impressive." Explaining her own situation, Rachel said: "Our house is a bit of a Piccadilly Circus. There are people in and out all the time, there are endless teenagers staying over. I could spend my entire life washing sheets if I really wanted to, and I don't. So I don't.
"Consequently it means that I am judicious in who I choose to wash the sheets for." When asked by her co-host Rick who she wouldn't wash the sheets for, Rachel mentioned "stinky teenagers" and her "23-year-old nephew".
So how often should you wash your sheets? Bedding experts have claimed you should wash and change your bed sheets once a week, or at most every other week. Experts at Bed Kingdom said: "Once a week is a healthy balance between washing sheets regularly enough to avoid the build-up of bacteria, germs, and dirt, without being so often that it becomes hard to fit into your routine."
