Met Office issues weather warnings as Storms Elin and Fergus smash Britain
The Met Office has issued weather warnings over Storms Elin and Fergus as Brits are hit by brutal weather brought on by a rain deluge.
Yellow weather warnings are in place today (December 10) and tomorrow (December 11) over the two storms set to hit the UK. A rain deluge hitting stretches of the country today is expected to continue through to the early hours of Monday morning. The stretch of rain hitting Carlisle down to Manchester and Sheffield will remain in place until 3am on Monday, with the Met Office confirming floods are a possibility for the affected areas. Journey times are likely to increase also according to an updated warning issued by the weather body.
Parts of the country are set to be hit by the pair of storms (Met Office)A statement from the Met Office read: "After a brief lull once morning rain clears from west to east across the area, further heavy rain or showers will develop Sunday evening, before clearing during the early hours of Monday. Many parts will see 15-20 mm, with the wettest spots seeing 30-40 mm. Given very wet ground, some impacts are likely."
Forecasts from the Met Office over the next few days confirmed "persisting" rains would hit parts of the country. Their forecast for tonight reads: "Rain across northeast Scotland persisting. Showers continuing to affect western areas, these merging to give longer spells of rain. Otherwise dry with clear spells. Windy with gales across the south."
Poor weather conditions are likely to continue into the early hours of Monday before a "generally mild" forecast takes over. The forecast for tomorrow reads: "Early rain clearing north and east across Scotland, otherwise mostly dry. Showers pushing in across the south and west during the afternoon. Winds soon easing during the morning. Generally mild." It comes as "heavy and frequent showers" were predicted for the next few days of the week.

From Tuesday to Thursday, members of the public can expect a brief spot of "sunnier spells" before a return to showery conditions. The Met Office statement read: "Heavy and frequent showers on Tuesday with strong winds along the coasts. Showers gradually easing into Wednesday with sunnier spells. Cloudier and windier on Thursday with rain and showers."
