Not everyone can be green-fingered or remember to water plants in their homes all the time, regardless of how many reminders you put in your calendar.

One expert has shared virtually indestructible plants, which "thrive on neglect," and need very little, if any maintenance. If you've been scared to commit to keeping plants alive to spruce up your home or even gift to friends who just don't know how to keep them alive, these could be perfect.

Tyler Woodward, health and wellness expert at , said: "With plenty of species of plants that thrive on neglect, little sunlight and minimal watering, there's no reason not to channel your enthusiasm for houseplants, all while you're outside, enjoying the changing seasons."

Speaking to the Express, the expert explained plants are known for their mood-boosting qualities and air-purifying qualities and whilst he couldn't absolutely 100 per cent say it was impossible to kill plants, he did say some varieties are not easy to kill and can be ideal in an urban home.

According to Tyler, the most hardy plant is a peace lily, which can flower in low-light conditions. The peace lily is a low-maintenance plant too, it requires little watering. During the winter you can just stick your finger in the soil to check if there is moisture, other than that the plant can be left alone.

In second place to the peace lily is the spider plant, which according to some experts can be forgotten completely and the spider plant can thrive in any room in your home. Tyler added: "You can forget about a spider plant to an extent as long as it gets a reasonable amount of sunlight, well-drained soil and only watered when it feels dry. This is the perfect plant for someone fearful of killing their greenery."

The money tree is next, and it’s popularly known to be a lucky houseplant. An expert said this plant doesn't need very much care, a little watering once a week and moderate sunlight and it's good to go. Another top choice for those who are plant-resistant is aloe vera. These plants are succulents which means they need little watering and care. They only need watering when the top inch of the soil is dry.

Making it to the top five the pothos houseplant [also known as Devil's Ivy] can survive in low light and only needs low amounts of water, its trailing leaves bring any room to life. The plant's name is a reference to how it grows up the trunks of trees in the wild and its shade.

Jo Lambell, founder of Beards & Daisies, said: "The darker days will not faze it [Devil's Ivy], however, you may notice its leaves looking a little pale if it’s not getting sufficient light. Like most plants in winter time, your devil's ivy won't need as much water during the cooler months so hydrate less often."

Jo also added that Devil's Ivy has a shallow root system so when watering the plant "less is more," usually watering the plants once every two weeks is enough.
