Horner admits he's "f***ed" as Red Bull F1 chief discusses being "hunted"

Christian Horner has admitted he is “f***ed” after an exhausting 2023 Formula One season.

Red Bull enjoyed a hugely successful campaign this year as the team successfully defended their crown - winning their sixth in total. Dutch sensation Max Verstappen enjoyed a stunning year as he broke countless records enroute to his third F1 title in succession.

Despite the huge success on the track, the season appears to have taken its toll on Horner. Asked if he was tired by Planet F1 at the Autosport Awards held in London, he replied: “Yeah, I’m f***ed.”

Away from that foul-mouthed assessment, the 50-year-old was more than happy to give his take on the season as a whole during the ceremony and couldn’t resist pointing to Red Bull’s terrific achievement.

“It’s been quite a year,” he said. “And seeing the guys, the team standing up there – what they’ve achieved this year has been absolutely phenomenal. To win 21 out of 22 races with this car has been quite sensational.”

He added: “It’s always nice to reflect on being champions. We only finished last weekend so it’s a good chance to hopefully look back and celebrate what we achieved this year.”

Having won the last two Constructors’ Championships, Red Bull have certainly become the team to beat in F1. However, Horner does not feel any added pressure heading into 2024 and insists he is only paying attention to his own team.

“Whether you’re a hunter or the hunted it’s just about focusing on yourself and keep trying to improve,” he said. “So it doesn’t matter who your opponents are. You’ve got to look after what you can control yourself.”

Horner’s championship-winning driver Verstappen also gave his thoughts on the season during Friday’s prize-giving ceremony in Baku and did not appear as exhausted as his principle.

He said: “This season, we’ve won a lot as a team, but it's also been really enjoyable to work with everyone inside the team. Of course, once you are winning a few in a row you want to keep that momentum going, the pressure is always on, you want to do well.

“I was never thinking about breaking records, just trying to be the best I could be during a race weekend, and enjoy it as well because you know that these kind of moments don’t come along that often. It was a very good year.”

The teams now have a couple of months out of the spotlight before F1 gets underway once more. The first race of the 2024 season takes place between February 29 to March 2 in Bahrain.
