Burnley's survival hopes have been dealt a hammer blow by news Luca Koleosho will be out for months with a knee injury.

Koleosho was injured in the first half of Tuesday’s defeat at Wolves and Vincent Kompany says he hopes the Italy Under-21 winger will be back before the end of the season. Koleosho, 19, tried to play on when he first suffered the injury at Molineux and Kompany says his scan results are not good.

“It’s bad news for us,” said the Burnley boss. “He’s going to be out for a while apparently. I’d like to think he’ll still play this season, but it might be towards the end of the season. We’ll do everything we can to make sure that he’ll get back healthy and ready to go again.”

Kompany says Burnley will be ultra careful with Koleosho, who has been outstanding for the Clarets in his first senior season in football since joining from Espanyol in the summer for £2.6million.

“I think now the key concern for us is to make sure he doesn’t sustain any long-term damage because he’s still young, we’ll do everything right by him,” he said. "Plus the fact that it’s a blow for a young player. I still think it’s for someone else now to step up and wear the shirt in a way that Luca has done.

“In these moments if you keep your head calm you can really get better, get stronger from these moments. I’ve no doubt he’ll come back stronger, but for us short-term wise, it’s an undeniable blow.”

Top scorer Lyle Foster is also still out as he recovers from his latest bout of mental health problems, seriously blunting Burnley’s attack. Kompany says they will look at signing players next month, but played down their chances of landing anyone.

“The squad is still fairly large and you know we don’t have unlimited resources,” he said. “But I’d say this, I think if we can find a way to improve the squad drastically, we’ll do that.

“But if that’s just to add numbers, that’s not what we’re out for. “You might see one or two names getting floated around, but there would have to be a real need need.”
