For the crumble topping:

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 400F (200C). Prepare your apples by grating three and then chopping the other three up into chunks. Gordon said it is important to keep the skin on the apples while making this dish. He explained: "There's a lot of flavour in the skin so don't worry about peeling the fruit."

2. Next, make a caramel sauce. Place a small pot on the stove and add some caster sugar. Let it heat for around five minutes until it caramelizes. Gordon said: "While making caramel, be patient. Always swirl the sauce [in the pan] instead of stirring it."

3. Once the caramel goes brown, add the cinnamon, vanilla seeds, and grated apple to the caramel mixture as well, and then lower the heat to cook for one to two minutes.

4. Keep stirring the mixture and then add in the apple chunks, cranberries, zest of a lemon, and lemon juice. Once the mixture appears ready, remove it from the heat and set aside.

5. Now it is time to make the topping. In a mixing bowl, place the flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon together. Mix together by rubbing the ingredients together with your fingertips until the mixture begins to resemble breadcrumbs. Add in either your muesli or granola and mix into the topping so that the topping is two-thirds crumble, one-third muesli or granola.

6. Scatter your apple crumble topping all over the caramel mixture. Turn the heat back on to heat up the sauce.

Gordon said: "Turn the gas back on. I want it bubbling before it goes into the oven because then you have to just cook the top"

7. Once the sauce is hot, place the dish in the oven. Cook in the oven for around 12 to 14 minutes until the top is a deep golden brown color.

8. Remove from the oven and your classic apple crumble is now ready to serve warm out of the oven.
