Teenager Brianna Ghey suffered a total of 28 stab wounds - including 14 to her head and neck - the trial of two other teens accused of her murder heard today.

Distressing details of the 16-year-old's injuries were revealed as jurors heard she would have suffered a “catastrophic haemorrhage” from a number of them. Brianna, 16, was knifed on a path in Culcheth Linear Park, Warrington shortly before 3pm on Saturday, February 11, 2023.

A girl and a boy, both aged 15 at the time, both deny Brianna's murder and cannot be identified. The girl, now 16 is known through the trial at Manchester Crown Court as Girl X, along with the boy, also now 16, is known as Boy X. Brianna's family, her dad Peter Spooner, mum Esther Ghey and sister Alisha Ghey were in the courtroom as a pathologist gave evidence

The court heard Brianna was stabbed 28 times, with 14 of the knife wounds to the teen's head and neck and the other 14 to her chest. Dr Alison Armour who carried out the post mortem at the Royal Liverpool Hospital the day after Brianna was killed gave a cause of death of “multiple stab wounds”.

Dr Armour told the jury, with the help of CGI images of where the injuries were, that both of Brianna's lungs had collapsed, and she sustained seven wounds to her left lung and one to her right lung. She said that wounds sustained to Brianna's neck would have caused “catastrophic haemorrhage” and injuries found to the chest would have required “considerable force to inflict”. She also said Brianna suffered a "sustained and violent assault".

The pathologist also said that Brianna suffered wounds consistent with "defensive type injuries" and added that there was no evidence that she had taken drugs or drank alcohol. The court heard that apart from her injuries, Brianna had been "perfectly healthy".

The pathologist was cross-examined by lawyers for both defendants. Asked about the knife that was used, the pathologist said only one knife was used to inflict all the injuries. She was also asked if Brianna had been stood up or lying down when the wounds were inflicted but she answered that she could only tell the court where the wounds were.

This afternoon, the jury is set to watch a recording of Boy Y's third interview with police.

Both teens deny murder, the trial continues.
