Luis Suarez is so sore from a career of playing football he cannot even play the sport with his son.

Suarez, who played his last game for Brazilian side Gremio on Sunday evening, is now a free agent and expected to move to Inter Miami. However, a Lionel Messi reunion is now in danger of not happening following Suarez 's comments after scoring in his side's win over Vasco da Gama.

Now 36, hours of playing football has taken its toll on the former Liverpool forward and he even hinted at retiring. "I can feel pain, my body is speaking for me," he said. "I want to enjoy and then decide for myself after a long career. I need to rest, enjoy my family… then the destiny will know where I'll be in the future."

Suarez added that he is so sore in the mornings he doesn't think he'll be able to play football on a smaller scale in a few years, even with his son.

"I have to think that in maybe five years I won't be able to play 5-a-side football with my friends," Suarez said. "The truth is that the first steps in the morning are very painful. Anyone who sees me thinks it's impossible for me to play a game. My son tells me asks to play with him and I can't."

The Uruguayan added that before each match, he has to take three pills and an injection just to be able to perform. If he does not do that, he won't be able to play and, at times, walk properly.

Messi's former teammate at Barcelona has been a long-term target of David Beckham's Inter Miami, a move that would also see him link back up with Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. By the time the 2024 season begins in February, Suarez will have turned 37 while Messi, Busquets and Alba will turn 37, 36, and 35, respectively, in the middle of the season. The quartet will be among the oldest in MLS.

Co-owner Beckham is hoping that if Suarez does decide to join Inter Miami, he can show some glimpses of what made him an effective player in his prime. In 52 games with Gremio, the 36-year-old scored 24 goals and had 17 assists in all competitions.

If Suarez does decide to hang up his boots, though, he will be known as one of the world's most prolific goalscorers for Liverpool, Barcelona and Ajax. With the Reds, Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 appearances before heading to Spain to join Barca. There, he won the Champions League and four La Liga titles. He won another Spanish league title after moving to Atletico Madrid.
