Callum Turner's life off-screen - quitting drug addiction and The Crown star ex
As actor Callum Turner promotes his new sports drama The Boys In The Boat, alongside co-star George Clooney, we take a look at his life behind the scenes, including his romance with a Netflix star.
London-born Callum entered the world of acting at the age of eighteen, having previously worked as a model for Burberry - as the face of their 2011 campaign photographed by Mario Testino. After being cast in the 2014 British drama Queen and Country, Callum's career went from strength to strength, and he ended up earning plum roles in prequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), and the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma.
Away from his glittering career, however, Callum has had to deal with some personal mental health difficulties, and he's previously opened up about his method of self-medicating that took 'four years of [his] life'.

During a 2020 interview with The Independent, Callum admitted: "I was a big stoner. I used to smoke so much weed. I was dealing with a depression or a frustration, and not having the understanding or the tools to deal with how I felt, so I self-medicated for too long."
The 33-year-old revealed that he had a serious marijuana habit between the ages of 18 to 26, and believes his use of the psychoactive drug 'definitely stunted something'. He continued: "The stuff in England is really… you get what you're given. It's not like in LA when you go to the weed version of the Apple Store and they're like, 'What do you wanna do tonight?' I was acting, doing films, and smoking weed every day.

"I never smoked on set but as soon as I got home, I was like a real addict. I definitely missed four years of my life." Thankfully, Callum was able to knock the habit on the head, due to having 'compassion and love' for himself as well as a 'determination to change and not miss [his] life'.
Eyes on 'iconic' role
Callum's career appears to be going from strength to strength, and there's one coveted role he absolutely wouldn't turn down if it was ever offered to him. During this same interview, the actor was asked whether he'd been keen to play James Bond one day, and his delight at the idea was evident. He enthused: "I'd love to play James Bond. It's iconic. I think everyone would, of course. Would you like to play James Bond?"
Netflix star ex and mystery woman
Callum was previously in a relationship with Vanessa Kirby, best known for playing the young Princess Margaret in blockbuster Netflix show The Crown. The pair reportedly called it quits in 2020, after four years together, with a source claiming they'd grown apart due to long periods spent away filming separate projects taking a toll on the relationship.
Speaking with The Sun at the time, the source claimed: "Vanessa and Callum are both rising stars in the acting world and in the last few years they have been flooded with offers. It's a really exciting time for them both. But as their careers have taken off, their relationship has suffered and they have gradually grown apart. It's very sad as they were once so close. But last year they made the difficult decision to go their separate ways and they both think it's for the best. It's all very amicable — things just weren't working out."
It's understood the pair first locked eyes on the set of Queen and Country, and that they initially decided to keep their romance under wraps. Vanessa was forced to come forward however after a passionate kissing scene with Tom Cruise, for Mission: Impossible, sparked rumours that things were heating up behind the scenes. To the bafflement of Vanessa, some even speculated that marriage was on the horizon.
Shutting the whispers down in an interview with Marie Claire, Vanessa, 35, said: "The most disconcerting thing was the people I didn't think would believe it did, and they were texting my boyfriend, asking, 'Are you OK?' I don't think they believe anything they read now because you just can't. None of it is real. To be getting married to him? Not even a snog—it was marriage."
Describing her then-boyfriend Callum as 'just completely wonderful', she added: "He's my best friend. I guess you can either choose to talk about it or not. If you talk about it, it becomes interesting to people, but if you don't, then it's not." It's unclear at the time of writing whether or not Callum is currently romantically connected with anyone, however, tongues did start to wag when he was spotted enjoying drinks with a blonde mystery woman back in 2021.
The Boys In The Boat will be released in UK cinemas on January 12, 2024
