Prince Harry being snubbed by one of his closest friends by not being invited to his wedding proves "how much of an outcast he is now," according to one royal commentator.

The Duke of Westminster Hugh Grosvenor is godfather to Harry's son Archie and is getting married next summer. The high society wedding's guestlist includes the King and Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales. But in a mammoth snub, Prince Harry has not been invited. Daily Mail journalist Tom Bower has said this just proves how severed relations have come within the ranks. He wrote: "Not being invited to such a wedding underlines how much of an outcast Harry now is." He believes the groom likely did not want to risk embarrassing the Royal Family by turning the event into the inevitable circus that tends to accompany Harry and Meghan wherever they go."

It is thought that Prince William is in the running to be best man for Grosvenor, who is also godfather to Prince George. Grosvenor is the King’s godson and had an official role in Charles’s procession at the coronation in May. A friend of Prince William and Prince Harry’s said on the wedding invite saga: "It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of the very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia and doesn’t want any awkwardness."

The reports come as the former head of royal protection claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are "chipping away" at the foundations of the monarchy amid accusations of racism against the King and the Princess of Wales. When the Sussexes made their explosive allegations on Oprah, in an interview broadcast around the world, they set in train a public debate about who in the royal family might harbour such racially charged views. In a multicultural modern Britain such allegations against the monarchy generated debate on a matter of such public importance with Scobie's new book claiming to add to that public debate. Now, the naming of the two royals across the UK and international media has plunged the monarchy into crisis.

Dai Davies, a former divisional commander in the Metropolitan Police who worked closely with Queen Elizabeth and senior royals, told The Telegraph: "Prince Harry and Meghan and those who purport to talk for them are slowly damaging the status of the Royal family. There is a false narrative that is being peddled about Palace racism. It’s not at all unusual to ask what a baby will look like."
