A homeowner shot dead a burglar while a grandmother and toddler were in the house amid reports of a "hot prowl."

Police were called to a home at around 5am on Saturday after four suspects had entered the home and allegedly threatened the homeowner with a gun.

"The officers’ preliminary investigation determined that approximately three to four armed males in their 20s entered the home with the intent to burglarise the location," according to LAPD officials. "A suspect pointed a weapon at the victim and while the suspects were inside the residence, the victim produced a firearm and a shooting occurred."

One of the male suspects was hit by gunfire and died at the scene in the Granada Hills in Los Angeles. His details have not been released by police. The three other suspects fled the scene and have not been identified but left a "trail of blood" at the scene which had suggested one of them was injured during the burglary.

"It is believed that an additional suspect was injured during the incident due to a trail of blood located during the investigation,'" authorities said.

Footage from the scene shows the moment an unnamed male homeowner was being detained while police confirmed a grandmother and a toddler were also in the house at the time of the shooting. A car linked to the suspects was later recovered by police.

Neighbours revealed they aren't shocked by the burglary as there are problems in the street. Pat Walsh told KTLA: "We’ve been having burglaries every day in this neighbourhood. So I’m not surprised at all. It’s been a real problem. Residents here are fed up."

Meanwhile, other neighbours were relieved the victims were not harmed or killed. "The suspects messed with the wrong homeowner,' one neighbour said. "So hopefully this will stop them. It makes me feel good that people are able to protect their homes and stop these guys."

The spate of "dinnertime burglaries" in the area has become more common according to police who said they target homes when they think residents are out for a meal.

The shooting comes after a teenager broke down in tears as he was jailed for helping his friend allegedly kill a homeless woman with a pellet gun during a horrific "Hobo Hunt."

19-year-old Ryan Hopkins, from San Diego, pleaded guilty in August to driving alleged shooter William Innes, 18, to where Annette Pershal was sleeping on the street in the early hours of May 8.

The 68-year-old victim, who was nicknamed "Granny Annie", was found on the street unconscious and taken to the hospital where medics discovered she had been shot multiple times with a pellet gun. She died just days later and her death was ruled as a homicide by authorities in July.

Hopkins received a three-year suspended sentence on Saturday as he sobbed in court in front of the heartbroken homeless woman's family saying: "I'm sorry to all you guys and the pain you have to go through... I'm sorry we're here today."

Innes, who is set to stand trial for Pershal's murder this month, allegedly sent a text message to Hopkins and his friends to say "'I'm going hobo hunting with a pellet gun." He faces a first-degree murder charge.
