Former Wrexham player Brett Ormerod believes the club can reach the Championship or Premier League in the next five seasons amid a revolution inspired by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Back in November 2020, Hollywood acting duo Reynolds and McElhenney - the latter famed for creating and starring in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ - teamed up to purchase Wrexham for just under £2.2m. They used their platforms to shine a light on the club and area, largely though the popular Disney+ documentary titled ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Wrexham achieved promotion to League Two last season and currently sit second in the fourth division of English football. The Red Dragons are five points off first-place Stockport and are next in action against Yeovil Town in the second round of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Ever since Reynolds and McElhenney spectacularly took over, the Welsh club have been buoyed by a newfound energy while also securing attractive and lucrative new sponsors. Ormerod, who made 74 league appearances for Wrexham between 2012 and 2014, has high hopes for the club as they look to continue climbing the ladder of the football league.

“Hopefully, I'd like to see them in the Championship or Premier League in five years,” Ormerod told Stocklytics. “The owners are ambitious enough to get there. They've always had the right fanbase and now they have the might of the Americans.

“Where Wrexham end up depends on where the owners want to take it. I wish them all the best because the fans have been through a lot of pain. I remember being there when the bills weren't being paid and they were being threatened to be kicked out of the ground.”

After 15 years outside the football league, the Red Dragons secured the National League title with 111 points back in May. Both McElhenney and and Reynolds were in attendance as an emotional 3-1 victory over Boreham Wood at the Racecourse clinched promotion.

The celebrity owners also rewarded the triumphant players with an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas to celebrate, highlighting the strong bond they have with the dressing room. Ormerod expects there to be more celebrations come the end of the 2023/24 season as Wrexham are in the mix to reach League One thanks to the strong setup around experienced manager Phil Parkinson.

“Phil Parkinson has a certain style of play,” Ormerod added. “He's done well at multiple clubs, including Bradford. He's got a certain pedigree.

“From what I have seen of Wrexham so far, I think they've got a strong team, full of good footballers. Time will tell how far they can go. I think they're good enough to get promoted this season. They'll definitely be up near the top.”
