UEFA have announced exactly how much prize money will be on offer at Euro 2024, with Gareth Southgate's England among the favourites to win the tournament.

A total of €331million (£283.9m) will be distributed between the 24 teams, the same amount of prize money there was for Euro 2020. The maximum amount of money the eventual winners could earn is €28.25m (£24.2m), depending on if they win all of their group games as well as their knockout matches.

Each of the 24 nations will bank €9.25m (£7.9m) just for qualifying, plus an additional €1m (£857k) for every game they win and €500,000 (£428,000) for every game they draw. If a team qualifies from their group, that will earn them an extra €1.5m (£1.2m).

€2.5m (£2.1m) will then be handed to the eight teams which reach the quarter-finals, while a semi-final berth is worth an extra €4m (£3.4m). Whoever then wins the final will earn a further payment of €8m (£6.8m), with the runners-up receiving €5m (£4.2m).

Exactly how the prize money will be spent will be decided by each nation's Football Association, but each team will have negotiated a performance-related bonus system ahead of the tournament.

For example, England's players were set to earn between £400,000 and £450,000 each had they won the World Cup in Qatar last year. However, they were ultimately knocked out in the quarter-finals by France after losing 2-1, with Didier Deschamps' side going on to lose to Argentina on penalties in the final.

England's Lionesses, meanwhile, banked bonuses of £55,000 each after winning the European Championships that same year. Manager Sarina Wiegman also took home a well-deserved bonus of £200,000.

And Southgate is feeling confident about England's chances of winning Euro 2024, having suffered a heartbreaking defeat on penalties to Italy at Euro 2020. Speaking after England's final qualifier against North Macedonia last month, which ended as a 1-1 draw, he told reporters: "The really big results were in March against Italy and Ukraine.

"It meant coming here was a completely different test. I thought that given we had already qualified and everything had been achieved the mentality of the players was excellent.

"The next exciting bit is the draw at the beginning of December and we will see what the path looks like. There are a lot of players to keep a track of."
