While December may be one of the most expensive months for Brits tightening their purse strings, there's one slightly cheaper silver lining this year.
Supermarket giants are locked in a price war over Christmas trees with festive firs at some of their cheapest prices in three decades. Aldi, Tesco and Lidl are among the big names vying for the top spot as cheapest spruces this festive season, with the former claiming to undercut all its rivals.
German chain Aldi has boasted of selling the most purse-friendly trees this year, offering a saving of up to 50% compared with other retailers. Bosses set prices for its medium trees at £16.99 which was matched by Lidl.
But while Tesco's £30 tree looked rather dear in comparison, the price tag on these was cut by half in response and now cost £15. Nordmann firs, which tend to be the most popular trees due to having a longer time for their needles to drop, typically cost up to £60 from local garden sellers and farms.
Morrisons and Asda meanwhile are currently charging £20 for their medium-sized Nordmanns, while slightly more costly Sainsbury's have priced theirs at £25.

Victoria l'Anson, a Christmas tree buyer for Tesco, said: "Christmas Tree Saturday has become as anticipated as Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and over the last few years we've noticed sales starting earlier in the season. The trend is so widespread across the UK that we refer to it as Christmas Tree Saturday.
"While most of those early sales happen on the Saturday, we see a spike across the whole weekend and the following weekend as it gives families the chance to enjoy the decorating ceremony together."
