Little-known sun-soaked city has golden beaches, hot weather and £28 flights
A beautiful city in northern Spain with surrounded by lush countryside is the trending destination for Brits in 2024, according to one study.
Vigo is located in the picturesque region of Galicia, which is at the heart of an area called Green Spain. While much of the country is a little arid and dry, parts of the north and north west are lush and verdant, benefitting from the their location on the Atlantic.
According to research by Skyscanner, it is going to be one of the hottest destinations among holidaymakers in 2024. The city has seen a remarkable 1,235% increase in online searches among Brits over the past year.
It is not the first city you might think of when you're dreaming of a trip to Spain, but it is a great alternative to some of the more obvious, popular and often overcrowded places. Compared to Malaga and Benidorm - which are increasingly roasting in June, July and August - the weather in Vigo is a lovely mid-20s for much of the spring and summer.

At the likes of Playa Samil and Praia do Vao the Ocean swell rises up into a formidable force that makes it a haven for surfers.
Spanish island loved by Brits wants to cut tourist numbers to stop 'saturation'
There's plenty to see in the city itself, which has a population of around 300,000. MARCO showcases contemporary art exhibitions, while theatres such as the García Barbón Theater host great local plays and dance shows.
The historic Old Town is a cultural hub of narrow streets, charming squares, and traditional Galician architecture. A pleasant afternoon can be spent wandering from here to the seafront promenade which is lined with cafes, restaurants, and sculptures.
Castro Fortress overlooks the bay of Vigo and provides a glimpse into the city's maritime past. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and the Atlantic Ocean.
If that sounds like it's up your street, then the good news is that a trip to Vigo is unlikely to cost you the Earth. Right now there are return flights from London Stansted with Ryanair for £28 return - ideal, so long as you're willing to brace yourself against the nippy Atlantic winter weather.
If you are in the mood for a holiday but want something warm and soon, then another Spanish destination may be preferable. The Canary Islands are a popular year-round choice, celebrated for their dramatic volcanic landscapes and unique black sand beaches, offering a distinct and memorable getaway.
Sunseekers fleeing colder northern climes can head to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, which both enjoy average winter temperatures of 22°C. Party-lovers might consider trading the slightly lower average temperatures of Lanzarote for some of the island’s famous nightlife. Check out our winter holiday guide for the islands here.
