British Gas is giving customers half price electricity on Christmas Day - but you need to sign up for the perk by a specific date.

The UK's largest energy provider is extending its PeakSave offer to include December 25, with the half price electricity available between 11am and 4pm. British Gas had already announced its PeakSave Sundays initiative was carrying on into the winter to include Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. It has now confirmed that it will include Christmas Day too, which is a Monday, for customers who sign up before December 17.

The discount is available to new and existing PeakSave customers, and all savings will appear as a credit on customers’ energy bills. The savings will appear as "PeakSave Credit" on your energy bill and you will be sent a summary of what you have saved each month.

However, you will need to manually sign up to the scheme and have a smart meter that sends readings every 30 minutes. The idea is that households can save money by doing more energy-heavy tasks - such as washing and cooking - when the scheme is active.

Over 425,000 customers taking part in PeakSave Sundays have been paid £2.5million so far for moving their activities. British Gas is also offering customers PeakSave Winter by taking part in the Demand Flexibility Service where customers are paid for using less energy during peak periods. Last winter, British Gas customers received a combined total of more than £1.8million through this scheme.

Catherine O’Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy at British Gas, said: “The coming months will bring both colder weather and all of the excitement and fun of the festive season. We know many people will be spending more time at home during this period, particularly on Christmas Day, and we wanted to give a little something back to our customers helping them to save on their energy bills while also contributing to a greener grid.

“The results from the scheme so far have been really positive and show that half price electricity on Sundays is helping our customer to save money while also shifting usage away from peak times. We expect the benefit of these savings to increase through the winter, as home energy usage goes up, and we hope to welcome even more customers to the PeakSave scheme to take advantage of the savings.”
