‘I always wash my potatoes in the dishwasher - people say it’s gross'
Getting all the food ready for Christmas dinner can take up a huge amount of time and energy - even more so if you have lots of people coming over. But now, one woman has shared her family secret on how to take the sting out of prepping the veggies.
In a video shared on TikTok by @bengiusd, an American lady reveals her ‘grandma’s best thanksgiving secret’ is to stack potatoes into her dishwasher rather than wash them in the sink.
Filming her preparing the root vegetables, a man behind the camera can be heard asking her what she’s doing and why the potatoes were being loaded into the dishwasher, she replied: “This is the best way to do it. It saves you so much time.”
Working alongside another woman, possibly her mum, the lady explains that they do this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas to wash spuds as it saves so much time. She went on: “Do you know how many people we have coming? And this is three bags of potatoes.”

The woman then explained that they try and get as many potatoes in as possible to the dishwasher, using all the available space provided. At one point, she even adds them to the cutlery holder.
Expounding her reasoning, the woman held up a potato to the camera and said: “You know how these are really, really dirty? Normally you would clean potatoes in a bowl – but you can’t fit that many.
“You can only fit five in a bowl. And we have three bags of potatoes, so the fastest way to wash is by putting them in your dishwasher.”
The woman then added that the most crucial part of the washing sequence was to check there is no detergent in there as that would ruin the tubers. And no matter how dirty the spuds might be, do not add any tablets or soap.
After making sure the appliance is ready, she finished: “This is the fun bit. You see all these different cycles – anti-bacterial, speed cycle, china etc – we just do rinse only. And then we’re going to press start for four minutes – literally four minutes.”
Showing off her superscrubbed spuds, the woman exclaimed: “They’re clean, you didn’t have to hand wash them. I’m telling you – it saves time on Thanksgiving or Christmas when you’re hosting a ton of people.”
The controversial video didn’t go down well with everyone, many of whom were left disgusted over where the woman had stuck her tubers. One person wrote: “Am I the only one that finds this GROSS?” And a second viewer added: “it is disgusting”, whi”le a third person joked: “tell me, you are american without telling me…
Other people watching were concerned for the dishwasher, with one fuming: “You’ll clog your dishwasher up with sh**e.”
However, lots of people loved the hack. One person gushed: “OMG…you are genius”.
