Piers Morgan naming the two royals at the centre of the "royal race row" has "smeared filth across the nation" - however, the monarchy needs to do better, an expert has claimed.

The TalkTV host announced the names of the royals on his show last night adding that he does not believe "any racist comments were ever made by any of the Royal Family", after thousands of copies of a Dutch version of Endgame by Omid Scobie were pulled for identifying those who allegedly expressed concern over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's son Archie's skin colour.

The Mirror has chosen not to name the pair. Buckingham Palace is understood to be "considering all options", including legal action. Mr Scobie, who gave an interview on ITV's This Morning today, has denied including the names, insisting he was not responsible for translated passages in foreign publications.

When the Sussexes made their explosive allegations on Oprah, in an interview broadcast around the world, they set in train a public debate about who in the royal family might harbour such racially charged views. In a multicultural modern Britain such allegations against the monarchy generated debate on a matter of such public importance with Scobie's new book claiming to add to that public debate.

Royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop believes the storm will "blow over" but adds it's a reminder for the monarchy. She told the Mirror: "It feels like a low blow – one that even Harry and Meghan in their hour of pain, post-royal family departure, couldn't bring themselves to deliver - the names of the two individuals who allegedly expressed concerns about the skin colour of Meghan's unborn child.

"It took Omid Scobie, another royal hack, but one unusually on the side of the Sussexes, to denote that bomb – albeit in error via a Dutch translation of his book. Then a 'shock-jock' (yes Piers, I am shocked) smeared the filth across the British mainstream media.

"Will the naming of the 'guilty' party harm the monarchy? In terms of their individual standing, this will blow over.

"Omid's book is yet another reminder that the monarchy did not do enough to protect Meghan, Britain’s first working royal woman of colour, from racist smears. We will with never know the truth of that exchange about unborn Archie – I expect the Royal family will stick to 'recollections may vary' - but a constructive conversation with the couple about their concerns is long overdue.

"More broadly the optics aren’t great: beyond the ‘terribly white’ balcony at the coronation (why couldn’t they have included some pageboys and girls from the Commonwealth?), Buckingham Palace’s admission it is ‘not where it would like to be’ on staff diversity says it all.

"At the last count, just 9.7 per cent of employees were from an ethnic minority in a city where over 40 per cent of the population are non-white. Not good enough. If this makes for uncomfortable reading at home, it will prove far more damaging in many of Charles' other realms. William insisted 'we are very much not a racist family'. Now they need to prove it. Actions speak louder than words."
