This weekend will see lots of people decorate their Christmas tree, and whether you're a fan of the plastic or a naturalist through and through, it takes a bit of prep to get the area ready to become the centre-piece of your home.

With the countdown to Xmas officially on, people's festive lists are getting longer by the minute, so most of us don’t need another ‘to-do’ added to it. However, one woman’s controversial declaration on TikTok has truly divided Christmas-prepping opinion.

Rhema, known as @rhema.br on the video-sharing platform, has sparked a festive uproar after her online tutorial showcased how to clean your Christmas tree before decorating it – in the bath.

Proclaiming it as an ‘unpopular opinion’, more than 1.9m viewers saw her haul her faux tree into her bath, before spraying it with surface cleaner, filling up the bath, and adding washing up liquid to clean the tree.

She then scrubbed the tree clean, before viewers saw the (surprisingly clean) bath water disappearing down the drain. She then proudly showcased her newly washed tree ready to be decorated.

Dubbed #CleanTok online, the trend for sharing home cleaning tips and tricks, the video received more than 4,000 comments from viewers, and truly divided online opinion, with many calling it an unnecessary TikTok time-wasting task.

One viewer asked sarcastically: “Is this before or after you power wash the tinsel” Another person likened it to pretending to be busy at work: “My boss trying to find tasks for me to do when work is slow.” And a third user questioned if it was actually cleaning it: "Seems like this may lead to mildew/mold depending on the type of tree."

One reader was clearly feeling the Christmas overwhelm, saying: How do people have the time/energy/patience to do this stuff? I can barely handle the basics.”

But some people were on her side, saying: “You know what…it’s your tree, live your best life.” Another person stated: "Well I agree with this. Everything should be cleaned before we put it inside the house." And a third user gushed: "This is something I would do….. cleaning is so satisfying…."
