People are just learning about a common dehumidifier mistake that could actually be costing you money - and they are kicking themselves for not realising sooner.

More and more Brits have introduced dehumidifiers into their homes to help tackle damp, fight condensation, and even save money drying their clothes. Mould and mildew, caused by condensation, can cause various health problems. But a dehumidifier removes excess moisture or water from the air, creating a much cleaner and healthier environment.

Compressor dehumidifiers are the most common choice for homes. They draw air into the unit when switched on, this air is then passed through a filter and over cold coils, which turn the moist air into water, which is then collected into a water tank. A fan then sends the dry air back into the room.

However, there are mistakes that people can commonly make when using dehumidifiers, which can even cost you more money in the long run. Experts at Honeywell have shared some of the most common errors people are making - and how to avoid them.

According to the professionals, one of the most common mistakes people make when using a dehumidifier is selecting the wrong size for their home. It is essential you choose the right size dehumidifier, so you can be as effective as possible in reducing condensation.

The experts told the Express: "A dehumidifier's capacity is measured in pints of water removed per day. If you pick a unit that's too small for your room, it won't effectively reduce condensation and humidity levels fast enough. Conversely, an oversized unit might turn on and off frequently, wasting energy."

In order to avoid doing this, measure your room's square footage and then choose a dehumidifier with the appropriate capacity.

Another common mistake is placement of the dehumidifier. Placing it in a corner or near walls and obstructions can "restrict airflow and thereby reduce its efficiency". Experts recommend you place the appliance in the middle of the room for the best circulation.

Similarly, setting the dehumidifier to the wrong humidity level can also be "counterproductive". If you place your dehumidifier on too low a setting, you can make the air "excessively dry and uncomfortable", but too high and it "won't effectively combat humidity-related issues".

And finally, like every other appliance in your home, it's important to properly maintain your dehumidifier. Neglecting to replace filters, empty the water out, or maintain the coils, can lead to "decreased performance and potential breakdowns".

You should follow the recommended maintenance provided by the manufacturer, but usually, most dehumidifiers have washable filters and clear indicators for when the water levels are too high.
