One of the teenagers accused of killing Brianna Ghey said they were "obsessed" with the schoolgirl, as they warned their co-defendant to "make sure story adds up", a court heard.

Brianna was killed in February of this year, stabbed 28 times in an attack at Culcheth Linear Park, near Warrington, Cheshire, and two teenagers, aged 15 at the time of the attack, are on trial at Manchester Crown Court, accused of her murder. Identified only as Boy Y and Girl X, both now 16, the pair blame one another for the attack and deny being responsible for Brianna’s death.

During the second day of proceedings today, the court heard from the prosecution, led by Deanna Heer KC, who went through a number of chilling alleged messages shared by the two defendants. In them, the court heard how they allegedly discussed killing other children, and also spoke about buying a knife, finding torture videos on the internet and more.

Amongst the alleged messages, the court heard that Girl X described being "obsessed" with Brianna. In the alleged conversation they used explicit and vile transphobic language. Girl X said: "I'm obsessed over someone I know but don't have feelings for them. She's called Brianna. I don't know how to explain. Also she has a d*** lol." She then sent a picture of Brianna to Boy Y.

Boy Y allegedly described Brianna as an "it" before Girl X said Brianna was "trans. She looks just like a girl and even sounds like a girl. She looks really pretty." The knife attack that took Brianna’s life came after Girl X had allegedly tried to kill her with ibuprofen, the jury was told.

Brianna had returned from a holiday on January 23 and her mum Esther Ghey recalled an occasion during that week when her daughter was sick and in "real pain and thought that she was going to die". Ms Heer told the court: "She recalls that Brianna vomited and that the vomit contained what she thought were grape skins but thinking back may well have been the remnants of red ibuprofen gel tablets."

The court heard Girl X told Boy Y how the tablets she gave Brianna "might slowly be killing her" as she was still ill with stomach pain. The court heard, Boy Y replied: "If it gets worse she’ll get taken to hospital but her liver should be done with it in a few days possibly by tomorrow."

Boy Y allegedly suggested adding ibuprofen gel paste to a concoction of drugs, sending Girl X a screenshot of a product she could buy. "He also suggested using lye, or sodium hydroxide, which he described as 'very dangerous'.

He suggested that Girl X could add it to Brianna’s drink, saying that she "would have to drink it fast though since it’s acid", the court heard. Girl X said: "I want something to pour into a drink that’s easy to get, odourless and kills her quickly".

The prosecutor said: "Boy Y’s web history showed that he spent the next hour and a half researching these toxic substances on the web, eventually telling Girl X, 'Unfortunately, I can’t find how fast it kills but I think it kills fast'."

Proceedings continue tomorrow.
