A woman has been hailed a "genius" for her bread-storage hack which she says helps it last fresher for longer.

Many people keep their bread in a bread bin, ready to make sandwiches, toast, or soldiers. However, TikTok user Sammar Charif, says this is not the best way to make your bread last longer. With money not going as far as it used to in the supermarket, making sure your bread doesn't go off before you eat it is important to save every penny you can.

Sammar, who has had over 3.4million views on her videos, shared that she doubles up her microwave as a bread storage spot. "People call me a freak when they see that I have bread in the microwave, but listen it keeps it fresh," she shared on her page @sammar_.

She added: "It lasts twice as long. This [bread] expired like a week and a half ago and there's not a teensy, incy bit of mould." She shared that it takes her three weeks to finish a loaf of bread because it last so long.

Tesco reports a loaf of bread usually lasts around two to three days. A lot of people freeze bread to make it last longer. But for those who don't want to have to defrost a whole loaf of bread just to make a sandwich, Sammar suggests keeping it in the microwave. A number of people who viewed the TikTok shared they also put it in the microwave to keep it out of reach from pets.

One individual said: "I put mine in the microwave because I don't have a bread box and my dog will eat it if it's on the counter." "This is always handy when you have a gremlin/kitten that will eat your bread," another wrote.

Sammar was branded "so smart" for her idea. One individual added: "Truth! I left bread in my microwave in my holiday trailer...from last season. No mould. So soft." "I do the same, I don't even use the microwave for anything else," another said. "This is so genius," another TikTok user commented.

Experts at King Arthur Baking said when bread is sliced, the environment it is kept in, and the packaging, are all factors which can affect how long a loaf of bread will last. They explained: "When your bread has cooled and you're ready to cut into it, think before you act. If you start slicing at one end, you'll always be dealing with an open end 'leaking' moisture.

"But if you slice the loaf in half down the middle, cut a slice from one of the halves, then press the two halves back together before wrapping, no open surface will be exposed – which means less chance of moisture evaporating." This hack is the first step you can take to make sure your bread lasts longer. Some people keep bread in the fridge if they don't have space for a bread bin – or they think it will help the bread last."

However, the expert bakers said that this is only a good idea if you are going to toast your bread when it comes out of the freezer. They claimed: "Chilling but not freezing encourages liquid in your loaf to continue migrating to the bread's surface, where it evaporates - and your bread quickly becomes stale."
