Turning to TV shows for baby name inspiration isn't uncommon, and according to a name expert, it's thought that a popular character from Sex Education could influence baby name trends in 2024.

As 2023 draws to a close with just a little over a month left of the year, baby name experts are looking ahead to the trends that could take shape next year and which names could see a spike in popularity. According to name consultant and YouTuber SJ Strum, new parents in the UK are expected to be influenced by the Netflix series Sex Education when it comes to naming their daughters in 2024, as she has predicted a rise in popularity for the name Maeve.

The character of Maeve Wiley is played by Emma Mackey in the drama series, and SJ said that while parents will be influenced by the popular show, the name could also become more popular among parents who want to lean into the "quiet luxury" trend that she believes will hit the UK in 2024.

Speaking about the trend with Yahoo UK, SJ said: "We love a timeless, traditional name in the UK but modern parents want to move on to rarer choices as unique names still dominate what we're after and why there's such a boom in using a baby name consultant."

Alongside Maeve, SJ believes traditional names such as Margot, Ophelia, and Nora could see a rise in popularity too. But it's not just the "quiet luxury" trend that's due to take the UK by storm next year, as SJ also predicted a continued interest in gender-neutral names as the country "moves to raising our children as individuals".

She said River is rising in popularity for both boys and girls, while Noah and the feminine equivalent Noa are also becoming increasingly popular alongside more unique options such as Wren and Indie. The expert even indicated we could see more parents naming their daughters Elizabeth, as well as diminutives such as Eliza, Elspeth, and Betty, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

For boys, SJ's predictions that follow the "quiet luxury" trend include Otto, Rupert, Otis, Beau, and Jude, while other names that are predicted to be popular in 2024 are Kit, Enzo, Reuben, and Lucas.
