A serving Metropolitan Police officer has been charged with the attempted rape of another man.

Sergeant Elliot Butler is also charged with causing a man to engage in penetrative sexual activity. The offences are alleged to have taken place around 10 years ago when Sgt Butler, who has been suspended from duty since allegations were made, was a Special Constable in the force.

The Met Police sergeant, who is attached to the force's Central East Command Unit, which covers Hackney and Tower Hamlets in north London, is due to appear in court on Monday.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: "He was bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday [Nov 27]."
