Klopp drops Nunez argument hint as Liverpool boss' anger is justified

Liverpool needed a late goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold to rescue a point at the Etihad Stadium and end Manchester City's long winning run at home.

Jurgen Klopp is still waiting for a first away Premier League win against Pep Guardiola, but the point ensures the two teams sit just one point apart after 13 games. There was a bit of aggro between Guardiola and Reds striker Darwin Nunez, though, with the matter addressed after the game.

Liverpool are back in action in the Europa League on Thursday, but for now the focus is now on the fallout from Saturday's draw. Here are the latest lines from around Anfield.

Winners and losers from City game

Manchester City struck first on Saturday, but Alexander-Arnold's well-taken leveller could be a big goal for the title race. Liverpool were able to ride their luck at times, with the hosts missing chances, before ensuring the spoils were shared.

Mirror Football has taken a look at the winners and losers from the top-of-the-table clash, with Alexander-Arnold in the former camp. The England international was put to the test by Jeremy Doku for much of the game but ended up having the last laugh.

On the other end of the scale was Liverpool's number nine. Darwin Nunez impressed for Uruguay during the international break but was found wanting against the reigning Premier League champs.

Ahead of Saturday's match, Jurgen Klopp had shown his frustration at the timing of the match. Both teams had players involved after midweek trips to South America, and Alisson in particular looked to be feeling the effects.

The Liverpool and Brazil keeper's poor clearance allowed City to capitalise with Haaland's opener and appeared to be struggling with injury in the closing stages. Co-commentator Gary Neville pointed out the keeper's struggles, as well as that of fellow South American Darwin Nunez, in his assessment of the goal.

“A giant of a striker, a giant of a man," Neville said of Haaland. "This all emanates from a potential Liverpool attack that Alisson makes a mess of, it’s the difference between Nunez up that end and Haaland at the other.”

Nunez vs Guardiola addressed

Jurgen Klopp pointed towards the "historic rivalry" between Liverpool and Manchester City after being asked about an altercation between Nunez and Guardiola. The pair clashed following the final whistle, though City's boss insisted there was "no problem" between them.

“I am the wrong person to ask,” Klopp said. “We’re not fierce rivals (with City), we are just rivals. But I am not sure Darwin Nunez knows about any historical rivals.”

Nunez made a big splash against City last season, announcing himself in English football with a goal against Guardiola's men in the Community Shield. He drew a blank on this occasion, though, failing to add to his recent international efforts.
