Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could return to the UK for Christmas, but one expert believes it would make the rift between them and the Prince and Princess of Wales worse.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex missed out on an invitation to join the Royal Family for King Charles' 75th birthday celebrations, but it's been suggested they're keen to build bridges with The Firm and are eyeing up an invitation to Sandringham for the holidays.

A source has suggested the couple wouldn't decline an invitation from Charles to spend Christmas with the Royals, but it seems it wouldn't go down well with every member of the family. Royal author Phil Dampier believes Prince William and Kate Middleton could skip Christmas with the Royals if Meghan and Harry are invited.

"If, and it's a big if, Harry and Meghan did come over for Christmas I wouldn't bank on William and Kate being there. They might decide they are due a Christmas Day with the Middletons," Phil told The Sun.

The Royal Family have been gathering at Sandringham House on Christmas Day for decades. Harry and Meghan last spent Christmas with the Royal Family at Sandringham in 2018. The couple then stepped back from The Firm in 2020 before moving to Montecito, California.

They have a tense relationship with the Royals, having made a number of allegations about them over the years. In 2021, Meghan and Harry sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, where the Duchess of Sussex opened up about her "feud" with her sister-in-law.

They then released a Netflix docuseries in which Harry claimed his brother "screamed and shouted" at him during a dramatic showdown at Sandringham. The Duke of Sussex also admitted he was "devastated" at not being able to protect his wife while she was "struggling" as part of the Royal Family.

Following their documentary, Harry further hit out at his family in his debut memoir Spare. He shocked the world when he recalled an argument with William which he alleged turned physical.

Following the frosty relations, a friend of King Charles spoke to The Daily Beast and said the monarch and his team were "never going to be bounced into inviting Harry and Meghan" for Christmas. They added that "when an invite does come, it will be carefully thought through and it will be on his terms".

Also speaking to the publication, a friend of William said he and his wife would find spending Christmas with the Sussexes "total humiliation". He asked: "Would you want to sit down for a slap-up Christmas lunch with someone who had basically called you an a**hole in public?"
