The King would "regret" inviting his son Prince Harry and daughter-in-law Meghan Markle to Christmas at Sandringham, it has been claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be keen to build bridges with King Charles and the British Royal Family, which follows on from a phone call that Harry had with his father last week. It is also claimed that the Montecito-based couple would "not decline" an offer to join His Majesty for Christmas at Sandringham in Norfolk this year.

An insider recently told The Times: "I can’t imagine the Sussexes would decline an invitation to spend time with His Majesty. As of yet, there have not been any invitations for the holidays."

And with them ready to accept an invitation, should one come, a national newspaper columnist has said that he hopes that "no such invitation is forthcoming". Michael Deacon, from The Telegraph, added that he fears the King would "soon regret it".

"As everyone knows, even the happiest of families can end up rowing at Christmas, never mind families that are already at one another’s throats," he penned in his most recent opinion piece.

Michael then said that there would be a risk that should the Sussexes attend Christmas with the Royals, they would then "give a tell-all television interview to Oprah Winfrey afterwards".

In his op-ed, Michael also penned a hypothetical transcript from a hypothetical televised interview between the Duke and Duchess and television icon Oprah. In the faux transcript, Harry noted how the visit was a "complete disaster", while Meghan fumed over a Christmas present she received - a Princess Barbie doll.

This comes after Harry and his father enjoyed a "polite" phone call last week, which happened to be the father-and-son duo's first contact with each other in six months. The phone call, which was to wish the King a happy birthday, also saw Meghan have a catch up with her father-in-law where they exchanged "awkward pleasantries".

According to a new report, the phone call and interest in spending Christmas in the UK comes as Meghan "begs" Harry to fix things with his family as the Californian-based couple are "desperate to save their reputation".

Closer reported that a source said Meghan has become "snappy" and has "begged Harry to do something to prevent them from being cut off completely - even urging him to take a solo trip to talk to Charles and William in a desperate attempt to keep a foot in the door".

Should the couple receive and accept an invite to Sandringham this Christmas, it will be the first time that they have spent Christmas there since 2018. At the time of their last Royal Christmas, the couple wowed onlookers on Christmas Day when they walked beside the Prince and Princess of Wales, Kate and William.
