Aspyr’s ill-fated remake of the classic RPG set in a galaxy far, far away is hitting even more roadblocks – but it apparently is still beinf actively worked on by a new team.

Update: A new report has surfaced suggesting that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake – originally announced as a PS5 exclusive – might not be cancelled after all, potentially giving owners of Sony's current-gen console a new hope that Darth Revan's story will indeed be told again. So suggests Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who in a Twitter post, revealed "two people from Saber Interactive tell me they're still on it, despite recent rumors that nobody is working on the game". Saber Interactive had been handed the project after it left Aspyr's hands.

Original story:

Before Mass Effect, there was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It’s that simple. Hence why PS5 players the world over were extremely excited when the latter was revealed to be receiving a ground-up remake back at 2021’s digital PlayStation Showcase. It’s been stormy seas for the remake ever since, however; first with original developer, Aspyr, allegedly being taken off the project, and now again if reliable games insider Jeff Grubb is to be believed.

“The rumour was that it got taken away from Aspyr, who has done lot of these Star Wars remasters and moved over to Saber Interactive,” Jeff Grubb recently said on Giant Bomb’s latest Game Mess Mornings podcast. “There’s been rumours it’s moved elsewhere since then”.

Grubb then went onto reveal what he 's heard from his own sources relating to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, explaining that “this game is not being worked on right now, full stop”. That's despite publisher Embracer Group not formally announcing such. Grubb then went onto clarify that the remake “is not being worked on in any way at any studio.”

A new hope?

News of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake’s probable cancellation is sure to be to the dismay of everyone who was looking forward to it; particularly those on PS5 where it was initially announced as a timed exclusive. The writing has been on the wall for a while, though, what with all the rumours indicating a troubled development. This came to a head just last week, when Embracer Group CEO, Lars Wingefors, failed to update shareholders on the game’s progress during its Q2 financial report when asked.

It’s been a long time since the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, so it’s no doubt disappointing to learn that not only has no progress been made on the remake, but that it doesn’t appear to be coming out any time fast on any platform. This obviously isn’t the first Star Wars title to (potentially) be cancelled, and it won’t be the last. Fortunately, other games set in LucasFilm’s universe continue to come out at a good drip, such as this year’s excellent Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Other Star Wars games currently in development include free-to-play shooter Star Wars: Hunters coming to Nintendo Switch and mobile devices next year. Arguably more exciting, though, is Star Wars Outlaws from Ubisoft, described as a GTA style open-world adventure set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Star Wars Outlaws is set to come to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, also sometime in 2024.
