A Christmas grotto has been cancelled because Santa is "too busy".

The event at Rawtenstall Market in Rossendale, Lancashire, was supposed to take place on Saturday November 25, but organisers announced on Facebook that it had to be scrapped due to "unforeseen circumstances entirely out of our control".

While the Christmas light switch-on event will still happen on Thursday, the market admitted Santa is "a little too busy" for Saturday's extravaganza to happen.

According to Lancs Live, the initial statement read: "It is with a heavy heart that we must share some disappointing news. Due to unforeseen circumstances entirely out of our control, we are sorry to inform you that the Santa Grotto event this year has been cancelled."

"Unfortunately, Santa has found himself a little too busy this year, and despite our best efforts, we cannot proceed with the planned festivities. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and we want to express our gratitude for your understanding.

"To make things right, we will refund everyone who purchased tickets for the Santa Grotto. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the refund process or any other matter, please don't hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

"Our team is here to help you and answer any questions you may have. Once again, we apologise for the disappointment and inconvenience this may cause."

"We appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to creating more magical moments with you in the future. See you Friday for the Christmas Launch. Wishing you a joyful holiday season, Rawtenstall Market."

In a further Facebook post, market bosses said it was first time the grotto was scheduled in three years. This post adds: "As much as we’re disappointed about the Grotto we will be sure to have some things going on at the Market as per usual for the kids. If you know us, we wouldn’t cancel unless all options had been looked into. Thanks for your continued support

One person commented on the first post: "Cant be helped sometimes. At least lots of notice." Another said: "Aww! We'll have to book somewhere else".

Another person responded: "That's a poor show, surely something could've been arranged rather than let people down when it's going to be hard to find somewhere else that isn't booked up."

A fourth individual remarked: "Surely they could find another Santa" while one offered: "I'd be your Santa. It's Christmas don't let the kids down.... I work with children got my dbs... no excuses I'm here and willing."
