The Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Edinburgh both 'repeatedly reached out' to offer support to Meghan Markle, but were rebuffed, according to a royal expert.

Meghan has spoken out on a number of occasions about the toll on her mental health during her time living in the UK as a working royal. In one interview with The Cut, she claimed that "just by existing", she and her husband Prince Harry "upset the dynamic of the hierarchy" when they were in Britain.

Meghan and Harry have an incredibly fractured relationship with his family since they stepped away from royal duties and left the UK in early 2020, citing what they said were the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media.

Since their move to California, they have publicly discussed their unhappiness with the royal family on a number of occasions. In their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan spoke about racism within the monarchy and Harry said Charles had stopped taking his calls.

But it seems the family did make efforts to reach out to Meghan upon learning of her unhappiness. Both Sophie and Kate were willing to help out Meghan after she joined the royals and later spoke out about her struggle within the Firm.

But royal journalist Rebecca English wrote in the Daily Mail: "They both, I'm told, 'repeatedly' reached out to Meghan after she first spoke of her unhappiness in 2019. However, I am also told that both Kate and Sophie were 'rebuffed'."

Meghan famously spoke about a disagreement between her and Kate, alleging that the Princess had made her cry ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry.

During the interview with Oprah, Meghan claimed that Kate, who had given birth to third son Prince Louis just a few weeks prior to the Sussexes' 2018 wedding, had "really hurt my feelings".

She said: "A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining - yes, the issue was correct - about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings. Everyone in the institution knew it wasn't true. I am not sharing that piece about Kate to be in any way disparaging about her. I would hope that she would want that to be corrected."

When Oprah tried to get more details, Meghan stated it would not be fair to go into further details as Kate had apologised. But she did make it clear the incident was a major "turning point". "And she brought me flowers and a note, apologising. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it."

Prince Harry also wrote about the incident in his autobiography, Spare, claiming that the bridesmaid dress row added to Meghan's anxiety over her feud with her father Thomas and other wedding planning stress, adding that the whole ordeal left her "sobbing on the floor".
