ITV I'm A Celebrity's Sam Thompson broke down in tears over health diagnosis
I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! star Sam Thompson once revealed he broke down in tears when he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Before his diagnosis, former Made In Chelsea star Sam struggled with paying bills, and looking after himself and would become overwhelmed when trying to stick to deadlines. He admitted his wish to become a father one day helped motivate him to seek out a diagnosis
His girlfriend Zara McDermott supported him through the entire journey and they started "communicating a lot more" after he was diagnosed. And in a candid chat, Sam praised his girlfriend – who recently appeared on Strictly Come Dancing – for being a huge support and said he's "very lucky to have her" in his life.
Speaking about his diagnosis, which was filmed for his documentary Sam Thompson: Is This ADHD?, he said: "I didn't think I would be bothered, and after six hours of therapy she told me I had ADHD."
Sam wept after being diagnosed with ADHD (South Shore)"I just wept, I got really emotional. So yeah it was definitely a relief," he added to MailOnline before the documentary came out in May. Earlier this year, Sam spoke to The Mirror about the frustrating moments he had as a child before he gained clarity thanks to the diagnosis.
Sue Cleaver feels 'more empowered' as she labels her 50s her 'happiest decade'
In an interview with us, he said: "Even from school I always got your bad report cards but they weren't like, ‘He’s a w****r’ it was more like, ‘He lacks focus or he doesn't try hard enough’. I just don't think that's true and I didn’t quite understand, I knew something was different. I remember crying into a textbook once at school because the words wouldn't go in, I couldn't focus on the book.
His girlfriend supported him through the entire thing (South Shore)"Things like I realised something was different with me and then as I got older, a lot of colleagues and people that I worked with would be like, ‘Oh, you definitely have ADHD’ but I didn’t know what they meant."
Reflecting on his motivation to seek an ADHD diagnosis, Sam explained: "I hit like 30, maybe had a midlife crisis, I was just like, ‘I need to be more self-aware of myself I want to be the best version of myself and I feel like there are loads of things that I'm struggling at that I shouldn't be struggling at‘.'"
Sam previously discussed opening up about his life with the world. The radio star has been on our screen for around a decade and "shared some of my most personal moments with the world." However, nothing "came close" to sharing his diagnosis with fans, friends and family.
"This documentary is the most vulnerable I’ve felt in front of the camera, as I wanted to be totally open about how I react to people in situations, and whether these could be linked to ADHD," he said.
