Lots of people love doing laundry, however, for others, it can bring a special type of dread as they fear it might result in ruining their clothes by shrinking, dyeing, or snagging them. We know the care label details the instructions, but if you are not familiar with the symbols and crosses, this may mean absolutely nothing to you.

However, there is a solution, which Instagram user Brad Canning has shared on Instagram to help. In a video on the photo-sharing site, Brad revealed you can simply take a photo of the garment’s care label and your phone will explain what each symbol means, so you can tailor your washing machine’s settings accordingly.

The post was captioned: “This iPhone hack is a game changer! you can use this feature next time you need to know a plant name too!”

“Grab your phone, open up your camera, take a photo nice, and close - I use the macro lens. At the bottom here you will see a little washing machine icon, if you press that, you will see there it says ‘Look up Laundry Care’, and when you press that the results come up to show you exactly what they mean: tumble dry, maximum 60 Celsius, do not bleach. This is honestly so good.”

What's more, this nifty tool not only helps you with your washing load, but also identifies plants, animal breeds, and much more. He added: “You can also use this to identify plants, dog breeds, cat breeds, statues, artwork books.”

So, what’s the catch? Turns out this feature is only available on select smartphones. Brad added: “To use this you have to have an iPhone SE or later, and be on iOS16 or 17.”

Fellow Instagram users were blown away by this. One person commented: “My mind is blown, and plants and breeds too?? I can’t believe there are apps that cost $30 when I’ve had this on my phone the whole time! Thank you.”

Another viewer added: “I never knew this. Thanks for the hack.” While a third user shared: “Omg hahah now I have no excuse if my plants die”, and a separate Instagrammer commented: “While I learned this in school that was 20 years ago and it is good to know that I can check easily.” There’s just one problem some noted – what if you cut the tags out of your clothes to stop them scratching your skin?
