Manchester United has enlisted the services of a Los Angeles-based recruitment firm to identify and scout top talent in a drastic new approach to transfers.

This strategic move comes with Manchester United trying to compete with Manchester City and Chelsea in the player recruitment arena. The club has concerns about lagging behind in the fiercely competitive transfer market.

The decision to engage an external recruitment agency for talent acquisition marks a departure from United's traditional in-house approach to managing this process. The decision follows Sir Jim Ratcliffe agreeing a deal to invest in the club as a minority shareholder.

Recent developments behind the scenes have already led to the removal of the club's chief executive, Richard Arnold, marking a notable shift in the leadership and strategic decisions at the club. According to The Sun, they will use LA-firm Pace to find an 'emerging talent scout' with a goal of competing with Chelsea and Manchester City in particular when it comes to finding top young talent.

Chelsea's signing of Cole Palmer from Manchester City has pushed the club's total spending on transfer and loan fees beyond £1 billion since Todd Boehly assumed control at Stamford Bridge last year. Palmer became the 30th player Chelsea has acquired for a significant price since Boehly appointed himself as the club chairman in June 2022.

Manchester City's payroll for this season stands as the largest in the history of English football. Their substantial financial backing has seen them consistently recruit top talents and have success in the transfer market.

In recent seasons, Manchester United have consistently spent more than they have earned. The club's net spending in the 2019/20 season was £-133.02 million, ranking third highest in the league.

In the 2020-21 season, they spent £-54.96 million, placing second highest. The trend continued in the 2021-22 season, where the club ranked sixth in the league with a net spending of £-94.8 million, and in the 2022/23 season with a net expenditure of £-196.62 million, ranking third highest.

The 2023-24 season saw the club's net spending at £-129.5 million, continuing the pattern of negative net expenditure. These figures indicate that Manchester United has been spending more than they have earned, resulting in significant financial losses.

Rumours are circulating about the potential threat to the position of Manchester United's football director, John Murtough. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is interested in bringing in INEOS sports director Sir Dave Brailsford, who could potentially replace the football director. Murtough, appointed in March 2021, played a vital role in bringing in Erik ten Hag as the manager in 2022. Paul Mitchell is one of the candidates being considered to replace Murtough in case he is replaced.

Ratcliffe's new role at the club comes nearly a year after the Glazer family, the current owners, indicated their openness to exploring "strategic alternatives," which could include accepting minority investment or an entire club sale. Ratcliffe's investment is expected to grant him more influence over the football aspects of the business once the details are confirmed.
