Tension between the bride and the mother of the groom can be all too common - but it'll likely go unaddressed out of respect.

It can be seriously nerve-wracking tying the knot in front of extended family and friends, and both members of the wedding party may have sweaty palms at the thought of all the new people they're going to be introduced to.

But when one mother of the groom decided to call her future daughter-in-law a "tramp" when she was inviting guests to the ceremony, people were mortified and were left wondering whether or not the invitation was actually a joke or not.

While the invite is clearly written in jest, it's hard to tell whether it comes from a place of affection, or whether it's the sign of some pretty deep resentment. The invite reads: "You are regretfully invited to the wedding between my perfect son, The Doctor, and some Cheap Two-Bit Tramp, whose name escapes me right now."

It goes on to proclaim that "the overwhelmingly disappointing heartbreak of a ceremony will be followed by dinner, where nuts will be served because whatsherface has an allergy."

he startling wedding invite was shared on Reddit, where one person described the groom's mum as a "pretty horrible mother." But other users were more skeptical about its validity. One user said: "Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that they start at 9pm?" Someone added: "This is obviously fake, if it were real, this would be terrible."

However, some pointed out that the odd timing could provide an insight into the monster-in-law's motives. Another user replied: "If I didn't want a wedding to take place I would make it as inconvenient as possible for the guests to be there."

Someone else joked: "If my (eventual) fiancee approves, I'd love to send a few of these out as a joke."
