Drivers are being warned of a little-known driving rule that could see motorists fined £1,000 over the state of their headlights this winter.
Getting behind the wheel in the winter can pose challenges for even the most competent of drivers. Icy road surfaces, poor visibility and the darker mornings and evenings can make life on the road very tricky.
The poor weather also means that many people are more inclined to get behind the wheel instead of walk, cycle or use public transport meaning that we have to navigate the difficult conditions on more congested roads. If you do drive in the dark there are several things you could do that might land you with a chunky fine, The Daily Star reports.
Experts at CarMats.co.uk have shared the rules all drivers should know for driving in winter - and in the dark - that people may not know could be expensive mistakes. However, there is one particular mistake people may not know that could see you forking out a £1,000 fine for. The experts warn that drivers should keep their headlights clear at all times. As visibility is already lower, having dirty or impacted headlights will make it even trickier.
"Failing to properly clean your headlights could mean they're not as bright, significantly impacting your ability to see at night, as well as being seen by other drivers. Rule 229 of the Highway Code states that 'you MUST ensure that lights are clean', and motorists caught breaking this, with lights that are obscured could land an on-the-spot fine of anywhere between £30-£100. This could soar to around £1,000 if the case goes to court," the experts said.

As well as keeping your headlights clear, there are other mistakes drivers could make without knowing. Another is not checking your tyre pressure and brakes for wear. When travelling in slippery conditions, the cold wear can "lead to them being less effective", so it's important to know your car is safe to drive.
Finally, the experts urge drivers to make sure all interior lights are off while driving too. It can hinder your visibility on the road - as well as cause reflections on windows, it's best to make sure to avoid being distracted they're all off.
