An American has been left scratching her head at British birthday party traditions - including wrapping up a slice of cake to take home for later. Georgia Peach, who now lives in Yorkshire, England, has taken to social media to share the traditions that made her question everything she knows about parties.

In a recent TikTok video, she said: "Pass the parcel - I didn't have a clue what was going on. I went to a birthday party, they're playing the music, they're passing around the parcel, undoing the layers and there's a little piece of candy. I didn't have a clue. I'd never heard of that game before in my life - what a legendary game. You're missing a trick America with that game at a birthday party."

Moving on, she questions why British parents wrap up a slice of cake for their guests to take home, rather than simply serving it up at the party. She added: "One I found super weird - not cutting the cake. Instead cutting it up, putting it in a paper towel and shoving it into the party bag.

"I had no idea. We got out of the car and I was like 'What is this mushy little thing in the party bag?' It was the cake, they don't eat the cake. You eat some buns or whatever the place provides - and you take the cake home. How strange is that?" Georgia goes on to admit she "prefers the American way', eating the cake at the party to be "done with it".

Finally, Georgia commented on how Brits usually do not open their presents at their party, instead waiting until after everybody has left to see what they've been gifted. She said: "This is one I think you guys get right. It blew my mind. You don't open the presents at the party. You take them home.

"I get now why. It can be quite embarrassing, people are on all different incomes. But we all sit around and open the present in front of everybody at home [in America]. But I agree with it. I get why you guys do that - but I was so thrown." Commenting on her video, which has almost one million views, one user said: "I was taught that opening presents at a party is rude because it’s like you’re more interested in the present than spending time with the person."

Another user added: "Cutting up and dividing the cake into party bags is our subtle way of saying go home, the party’s over now." A third user said: "Cake in party bag = party is over." One more user added: "The presents can also be embarrassing when kids don’t act grateful for something in front of the buyer."
