Emmerdale star rushed to A&E after 'really bad' accident on night out
Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten has revealed she had a “really bad” accident on a night out that saw her rushed to hospital.
The 39-year-old actress, who starred as Rachel Breckle in the ITV soap from 2011 to 2015, currently has her arm in a sling after “chipping the bone” when she fell over on Wednesday night.
Sharing a picture of her badly bruised arm to her Instagram stories, Gemma explained she was on her way to the opening of Michelin-star chef Tom Brown’s new oyster bar in London’s Shoreditch with her dog Ruby in tow when it happened.
She said: “Then I fell. Literally. Really badly on the walk home with Ruby on Wednesday night and then she had another seizure when we got to bed too...I powered through last night as I didn’t want to let Tom down and desperately wanted to see Joff [her friend] and I’m so glad I did (didn’t we scrub up well!).”
But the next day, Gemma realised her injuries were more serious than she thought. “So today I went to A&E and discovered I’ve got some nice little chips of bone off my elbow and now I’ve a glamorous sling and a heap of painkillers.

Gemma posted this photo of her badly bruised arm on social media (Instagram)In a heartfelt message to fans, she added: “Why am I sharing this? Well, to say – that’s life! It’s got ups and downs, but it’s how you handle it that is the game changer. I’m so blessed for this week. I’m so grateful for the moments, the friendships and the support of all I’m striving for. But most of all I’m proud of myself and how I have reacted.
“As the quote goes – our greatest glory is not in ever falling, but in rising every time we fall – CONFUSCIOUS. I’m grand, I’m feeling so positive and empowered and considering the girl I was – I am bloody delighted with the open, authentic, vulnerable, bounce back ability woman I am becoming. Life is a journey. Keep learning. You matter.”
Since leaving Emmerdale, Gemma briefly appeared in rival ITV soap Coronation Street in 2021 as Isla Wood, a potential new love interest for Tyrone Dobbs before he got back with long-time love Fizz.
Though she still acts and works in radio, Gemma has focused much of her attention on raising awareness of eating disorders after bravely sharing her own struggles with anorexia and bulimia.
Last year, the star revealed nearly two decades of battling eating disorders had caused irreparable damage and left her needing new top teeth. She has since had “life-changing” dental work to get her smile back.
Opening up about the devastating impact bulimia had on her teeth, after the acid and bile began to erode them, she said: "To think that [you could lose your teeth] is not something you even want to contemplate.
"An eating disorder is very manipulative and makes you feel ashamed. I felt disgusting and I was made to feel disgusting by my dentist when I was younger after the acid eroded my teeth." Since having the work done, Gemma said she feels like she has a “real chance of moving forward”.
Gemma is now the CEO of charity SEED, which stands for Support and Empathy for people with Eating Disorders. Her mother Marg, who is co-founder of the charity, recently received an MBE for her work.
