Prince Harry struggled to accept mum's death and convinced himself it was faked
Prince Harry was left heartbroken at just 12 years old when he received the earth-shattering news that his mother Princess Diana had died.
The former Princess of Wales and her boyfriend Dodi Fayed died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997 while their driver, Henri Paul was fleeing the paparazzi. Henri also died in the crash. The events leading up to the fatal crash are set to be shown in the final season of The Crown.
The Duke of Sussex has opened up about his mother's death and admitted he was in a state of disbelief when he was told the tragic news. King Charles sat at the end of Harry's bed as he broke the news to his son.

He said he justified this theory by thinking: "She's been very unhappy, she's been harassed, lied to, and lied about her. So she's faked this accident as a move to make them get away from her."

Harry went on to say that he believed Diana was renting an apartment in Paris, or had secretly bought a cabin in the Swiss Alps. The Duke of Sussex said this helped him to feel "much better" about her traumatic death.
He admitted that he always believed she would come back. In Spare, Harry said: "This is her way of fighting. She will come back. Sure. In two weeks it's my birthday."

In his book, he revealed how he enjoyed a birthday cake and sorbet at the school before being presented with a gift by his aunt, Diana's sister Sarah McCorquodale.
The gift was an X-box games console that Diana had bought for him before she had died. She had been planning to give it to her son on his special day.
Elsewhere in Spare, Harry hit out at his father as he claimed Charles "did not hug" him when he told Harry about Diana's death. Harry also said he "felt like a politician" as he later met grieving Brits at his mother's funeral.
