Big Brother's Trish 'devastated' and 'embarrassed' after 'racist' tweets emerged

Big Brother's Trish Balusa has admitted she was "embarrassed" after historic tweets came to light following her eviction.

The housemate who was previously a firm favourite amongst viewers says she was left "devastated" and in "shock" when the posts which have been deemed to be racist and homophobic resurfaced online. Following the tweets emerging, ITV explained they were investigating how these slipped through those who perform checks on the housemates and their online presence.

Following the posts coming to light, it emerged Trish would not be interviewed on Big Brother: Late & Live alongside previous evictees. Although she addressed her tweets in a Twitter statement, she has now opened up in greater detail.

In a new interview, the self-proclaimed left-wing feminist said: "You know, I was so shocked, I think for the first time, I looked in the mirror and I saw in myself, the people that I criticise and the things that I stand against." She went on to say that although people can express a certain view online, you "move on" from this and learn from previous errors.

Speaking to the Indy100, Trish continued: "Naturally, I felt defensive to think 'No, I didn't write that', but then I copy and pasted it, I'm very open about being accountable. What I did, I copy and pasted some of the tweets to see if they would come up on my Twitter and when I realised that they did, honestly, I was devastated.

"I can't explain the embarrassment I felt, I can't explain the embarrassment that I still feel." Trish went on to share her struggles over how she will address the scandal with her son. Just two days before the final, she says she will have "honest" conversations with her fellow housemates including Yinrun, who is from Shanghai, Jordan, Henry and Matty, who are all gay – about her racist and homophobic posts.

However, Trish went on to say she was "really apologetic" to her brother who identifies as transgender. Last week, Trish issued an apology online addressing the "concerning" tweets and offered an apology for the posts which shared "harmful stereotypes" of marginalised communities.

In a statement, Big Brother said: "This weekend, we have been made aware of concerning historical tweets. We are currently looking into why they were not identified by the independent supplier we engage to review the digital footprint of potential Housemates as part of our pre-checks."

Big Brother continues at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
